The legendary Indian movie star, Dev Anand Bollywood’s evergreen hero who recently died this month. has been Given with an unprecedented rewarded by the British Actors Union.

Legendary actor Dev Anand, the ‘evergreen romantic superstar’ of Indian cinema, died in London on Saturday night following a cardiac arrest. He was 88.

Dev Anand, was in London for medical check up, was not keeping well for the last few days, family sources said. His son Sunil was with him when he breathed last.

Amitabh Bachchan on Sunday morning tweeted, “Just reading news about Dev Saheb.. praying it is not true… He was such a positive person.. never associated death with him..”

Dev Anand made his debut as an actor in 1946 in ‘Hum Ek Hain’. By the time his ‘Ziddi’ was released in 1947 he was a superstar and has never looked back.

Versatile Dev Anand has given countless hits like ‘Paying Guest’, ‘Baazi’, ‘Jewel Thief ‘, ‘CID’, ‘Johny Mera Naam’, ‘Amir Garib’, ‘Warrant’, ‘Hare Rama Hare Krishna’ and ‘Des
Pardes’.

For his outstanding contribution to Indian cinema, Dev Anand was honoured with the prestigious the ‘Padma Bhushan’ in 2001 and ‘Dada Saheb Phalke Award’ in 2002.

He established his film production company ‘Navketan International Films’ in 1949 and has produced more than 35 movies.

Dev Anand won two Filmfare Awards – India’s equivalent of the Oscars – in 1958 for his performance in the film ‘Kala Paani’ (Black Water) and in 1966 for his performance in ‘Guide’.

‘Guide’ went on to win Filmfare Awards in five other categories including ‘Best Film’ and ‘Best Director’ and was sent as India’s entry for the Oscars in the foreign film
category that year.

He co-produced the English Version of ‘Guide’ with the Nobel Laureate Pearl S Buck (‘The Good Earth’).

In 1993, he received a Filmfare ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ and in 1996 he received a Screen Videocon ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’.

Of late he was involved in the direction of a new all American film Project ‘Song Of Life’ – a musical love story which was to be shot in the United States.

He was to play the central character in the film which was to have a predominantly American star cast.

Dev Anand is the second of three brothers who were active in Hindi Cinema. His brothers are Chetan Anand and Vijay Anand. Their sister, Sheel Kanta Kapur, is the mother of renowned film director Shekhar Kapur.

The 88-year-old Dev Anand he has been in Bollywood for more than six decades now and delivered hits like Jewel Thief, Guide, Hare Rama Hare Krishna, and veteran actor Dev Anand has added yet another award to his collection of many Award.

The handsome and desing hero of the past Dev ji who received a lifetime achievement award of his perfection from NDTV at a glittering ceremony, started his career in 1945 and got his first big break with ‘Ziddi’ in 1948 and never had to look back since then.

Veteran actor-director Dev Anand will be honoured with the national Kishore Kumar Samman for the year 2010-11 by the Madhya Pradesh government.

Similarly, noted music director, Rajesh Roshan will be bestowed with the national Lata Mangeshkar award. Giving this information, State Culture Minister Laxmikant Sharma said both film personalities had done a commendable work in their long cinematic career.

They will be presented with Rs two lakh in cash, a scroll of honour, shawl and `shreephal`.

The 88-year-old `evergreen` actor will be felicitated at a function in Khandwa on October 13 while Roshan will recieve the award at a function in Indore for which the date is yet to be finalised.

* In 2008 he was guest of honour at a dinner hosted by the Provost of Highland Council in Inverness, Scotland to celebrate 10 years since he first worked in the Scottish Highlands. He spent several days in the area, en route to Cannes, as a guest of the Highlands and Islands Film Commission.

Bollywood’s evergreen star Dev Anand has been honoured with a lifetime achievement award for his contributions to the Indian cinema.

Justice V S Malimath, former chief justice of Karnataka and Kerala High Courts, conferred the film icon with ‘Anmol Ratan, Lifetime Achievement Award’ at a function organised by the Vintage Film-Music Lovers’ Association on Saturday.

The actor-auteur, known for his trademark singsong voice and penchant for nodding, also spoke about his future projects.

“I am also planning an English film based on NRIs in London, which will be shot in Europe,” he said.

To a question on making a film on strengthening Indo-Pak ties, Dev Anand, who was born in Gurdaspur in undivided Punjab and studied in Lahore, said “the country is going through a political turmoil after Benazir Bhutto’s assassination. Let it settle. I have’nt thought about it as of now”.

On his message to the youth in Bangalore, he quipped, “they are very smart and intelligent and know how to go about in life. They do not need any message.”

vegetarian and a teetotaller, Anand, who turns 84 this month, says he never feels old because he retains all the elements of youth.

“I’m excited all the time about the things I do. So I feel young. Young people feel excited all the time,” he said. “And what compensates me for my youth is my wisdom, my experience, whatever I have gained from life so far.”

Anand’s autobiography is due out this month. He says the book mentions details even his family does not know.

“I’m getting old and there’s so much to say,” he said about his autobiography titled Romancing with Life.

Anand will tour India with his 465-page book which he will also take to Frankfurt, London, Stockholm, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Atlanta and Canada.

Legendary actor Dev Anand will be felicitated at a function here later this month for his outstanding contribution to the film industry for about 60 years.

He will be given a Lifetime achievement award at the function on January 19, being organised by Ramya Cultural Academy in association with Vinmusiclub, an organisation run with goodwill and support of lovers of vintage music here.

The event will also showcase the contributions of Dev Anand with a music journey, “Gata Rahe Mera Dil” with selected songs and clippings from some of his best films.
