Baazi, Guru Dutt’s directorial debut. The film, written by actor Balraj Sahni, was a trendsetter of sorts leading to the spate of urban crime thrillers Bollywood churned out in the 1950s. The film took Dev Anand to dramatic star status. It was also the beginning of seeing Dev play mostly hard-bitten characters living in the urban underbelly.

The next pairing of Dev Anand and Guru Dutt was Jaal (1952). Dev played a heartless smuggler who only repents right at the end of the film. It was a finely shaded performance but the film didn’t do too well at the box-office. The partnership came to an end when Guru Dutt decided to act in his own films.
Dev anand went for guru dutt and they cameo ut with baazi in 1951 the film did very well. It took dev anand to a star status.

Dev Anand Express his views about Guru Dutt in an Interview

Our friendship dates back to the Prabhat era..he was assistant director to a very famous director. I had just started as a leading man. I think if I can call anybody in the movie industry as my greatest pal it was Guru Dutt. And we struck a great friendship jaise langotiya yaar kehte hain hum jaise dost the. And we struck a deal over a glass of beer and then he said Dev..if I ever become a director you are my star and I said if I ever form a company and I invite a directory to direct a film you’re going to be THE one.

I was on the sets of Teen Deviyan and I was ghost directing for Amarjeet a friend of ours and I got a news that Guru Dutt is dead. I packed up.. I went straight to his house and I was the first man to see him lying on his bed. There wasn’t anybody in the room. I was the first man to enter the apartment and be near his body. and I saw him and his face was blue slightly. There was a glass of…. there was a blue liquid in a glass next to him and I think. I do not know what happened….it was a very sudden death. and I had met him 5-6 days earlier when he had invited me -come over let’s do a picture together but at that moment a I also realized when I saw that he was looking very frail very feeble…yellow on the face, he had lost his hair. This was not the same Guru Dutt because he had made some very beautiful films…the film that he made Kaagaz Ke Phool was a very brilliant film but it didn’t do well..and he could not take it after that he never directed a picture. so that was the start of his physical downfall. Even his creative downfall. Sad..

Dev Anand got a standing ovation at the launch function that was also attended by Goa Chief Minister Digamber Kamat and film festival director Neelam Kapur.

“Paying tribute to Vijay Anand is like paying tribute to a great master. I’m not saying this because he is my brother. His sense of scripting and filmmaking was incredible. When he used to come on the sets he used to be the king,” said Dev Anand, who came with his son Sunil for the special function here.

The retrospective started with all-time classic “Guide”, and the show was houseful.

Based on a novel by R.K. Narayan, the film revolves around a tourist guide, played by Dev Anand, and a dancer, essayed by Waheeda Rehman, who is not happy with her married life.

Dev Anand does not need any introduction as he has been serving the film-industry for the last half decade. He has Devanandbeen dominating the screen with bubbling enthusiasm and youthful vigor. Dev Anand has established a landmark for all times, unlike the other great names. That’s why Dev Anand can be compared with any youthful artistes anywhere in the world-yesterday, today or tomorrow.

Over fifty-five years of life in cinemas has seen various phases of man’s instinct and woman’s desires. In fact he is the only film star who never really loved a woman yet practically all the woman in his life, on and off screen, adored and worshipped him and continue to do so. A phenomenon, a craze, a legend par excellence till date!
As an actor, he has already immortalized himself in Guide. His own directorial ventures like Hare Rama Hare Krishna created another vogue in motion picture making. In fact, he was the first person to make a film, which was entirely based on cricket, Awwal Number, starring Aamir Khan in the lead.

Previously his cinematic achievements included Baazi and CID which too came at a time when the film industry was at its lowest phase. History repeated itself, when success followed with Johny Mera Naam and Amir Garib, infusing new life into Hindi cinema.

Dev Anand, in fact has saved many a leading filmmaker from the throes of bankruptcy, like Munimji saved the tottering Filmistan studios in Mumbai from collapse and Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai gave a new lease of life to Nasir Hussain who eventually became a very successful movie maker.

His own banner, ‘Navketan’ has been responsible for creating many legends among stars and directors like Guru Dutt, Raj Khosla, Vijay Anand, Waheeda Rehman, Zeenat Aman, S.D. Burman, R.D. Burman and Tina Munim.

At the moment, this evergreen young man is busy making his new venture, Love at Times Square.

Truly, Dev Anand is a true living legend.

Dev Anand was born in Gurdaspur in Punjab to a well-to-do advocate, Pishorimal Anand. He graduated in English literature from the Government College, Lahore (now in Pakistan). His love for acting made him leave his hometown.Dev began his career in the military censor office at Churchgate, Mumbai, for a princely salary of Rs 160. He was soon offered a break as an actor by Prabhat Talkies to star in their Hum Ek Hain (1946). While shooting for the film in Pune, Dev struck a friendship with fellow actor Guru Dutt. Soon, they were swapping shirts, double dating and sharing dreams. They made a pact: if Dev produced a film, Guru Dutt would direct it; if Guru Dutt produced a film, Dev would act in it.

Dev made the grade first. By a strange coincidence, Dev was offered his first big break by Ashok Kumar, his favourite star. Kumar spotted Dev hanging around in the studios and picked him as hero for the Bombay Talkies production, Ziddi, costarring Kamini Kaushal (1948). His first success came with Ziddi (1948).

In 1949, he turned producer and launched his own “banner” Navketan, which continues to churn out movies year after year. Though his maiden attempt at direction, Prem Pujari, flopped, his second directorial effort Hare Rama Hare Krishna in the 1970’s with Zeenat Aman was a big success.

Dev never looked back. He bought his first car, a black Hillman. His dream of working with his teenage idol, actress Snehprabha Pradhan, was also fulfilled.

As promised, Dev gambled on Guru Dutt as director for the crime thriller, Baazi (1951). The dice rolled in favour of this creative collaboration; the Sahir [Ludhianvi, lyricist] song, Tadbeer se bigdi huyee taqdeer bana de, proved prophetic and Dev became a true blue star. It also crystallised his image as an urban cowboy with more than his share of smarts.

At this stage, Dev was drawn towards grey-shaded roles and films with a noirish flavour, like Jaal (1952). He played a gambler, a smuggler, a blackmarketeer. The year 1954 was a crucial one. Dev was one of the earliest Indian stars to visit Russia. His starrers, Rahee and Aandhiyan, were screened there along with Raj Kapoor’s Awaara. In the same year, Taxi Driver was declared a hit. Dev’s heroine was Kalpana Kartik again, and the two decided to marry in a quiet ceremony during a lunch break on the sets!

Marriage and the birth of son Suneil in 1956 did not affect Dev’s draw. A rapidfire style of dialogue delivery, an array of hats (remember Aye meri topi palat ke aa?), and a penchant for nodding while speaking became Dev’s USP in films like Munimji, CID and Paying Guest.

His style was lapped up by the audience and was widely imitated. He starred in a string of box office successes for the remainder of the 1950’s and some of his hit films include Munimji, CID, Paying Guest, Gambler, Tere Ghar ke Saamne and Kaala Pani.

Sure, he had style, but Dev’s detractors cast aspersions on his acting abilities and questioned his inclusion in the hallowed Raj [Kapoor]-Dilip [Kumar] league. Dev made them eat humble pie with his class act in Kala Pani (1958), as the son who is willing to go to any lengths — including sweet-talking a courtesan into believing he is in love with her — to clear his framed father’s name. He won the Best Actor Award for the film.

He was romantically involved with singer-actress Suraiya and the two of them paired in six films together. During the shooting of a song, a boat capsized and Dev Anand saved Suraiya from drowning. She fell in love with him but her grandmother opposed the relationship. Suraiya remained unmarried all her life.

The evergreen star of Hindi cinema Dev Anand, who has romanced numerous beautiful women on the screen, has rarely been heard of confessing about his real life love for his co-star Suraiya.

Dev Anand has now admitted to have loved her and has made a special mention of this in his forthcoming autobiography titled Romancing With Life.

“Yes. I loved Suraiya. I am not shying away from this fact. I want to tell everything what happened during those days in my autobiography. It was a very important chapter of my life as I was growing. I was young and in love for the first time,” Dev Anand said. With his eyes lit up and face glowing while speaking about his first love, who died single, Dev Anand said, “She was a big star. I was new. But I was also strong and sophisticated. I was educated, confident and was aware that I was going somewhere in life.”

Dev Anand has numerous fond memories of his first love. One incident in particular is etched in his memory. “During the shooting of a song sequence in a lake, we were sitting on a boat, and she slipped. I jumped into the water to save her from drowning,” According to Dev Anand.

In retrospection, the actor thinks the couple were destined to get separated.

“It is all in the book. Whatever has been said about my relationship with Suraiya is false. Readers will get the true picture after reading it,” the actor said. Speaking from his own experience he said that emotions were important in life as it made one more matured. But career was also important to grow in life.

“One has to be on top. It has to be there on your mind. But for that one needs to make lot of sacrifices. Someday you have to break away from your loved ones against your wishes. You will be heart broken. But you have to bear the sorrow to grow and belong to the world,” According to Dev Anand.
