Legendary actor Dev Anand, the ‘evergreen romantic superstar’ of Indian cinema, died in London on Saturday night following a cardiac arrest. He was 88.

Dev Anand, was in London for medical check up, was not keeping well for the last few days, family sources said. His son Sunil was with him when he breathed last.

Amitabh Bachchan on Sunday morning tweeted, “Just reading news about Dev Saheb.. praying it is not true… He was such a positive person.. never associated death with him..”

Dev Anand made his debut as an actor in 1946 in ‘Hum Ek Hain’. By the time his ‘Ziddi’ was released in 1947 he was a superstar and has never looked back.

Versatile Dev Anand has given countless hits like ‘Paying Guest’, ‘Baazi’, ‘Jewel Thief ‘, ‘CID’, ‘Johny Mera Naam’, ‘Amir Garib’, ‘Warrant’, ‘Hare Rama Hare Krishna’ and ‘Des
Pardes’.

For his outstanding contribution to Indian cinema, Dev Anand was honoured with the prestigious the ‘Padma Bhushan’ in 2001 and ‘Dada Saheb Phalke Award’ in 2002.

He established his film production company ‘Navketan International Films’ in 1949 and has produced more than 35 movies.

Dev Anand won two Filmfare Awards – India’s equivalent of the Oscars – in 1958 for his performance in the film ‘Kala Paani’ (Black Water) and in 1966 for his performance in ‘Guide’.

‘Guide’ went on to win Filmfare Awards in five other categories including ‘Best Film’ and ‘Best Director’ and was sent as India’s entry for the Oscars in the foreign film
category that year.

He co-produced the English Version of ‘Guide’ with the Nobel Laureate Pearl S Buck (‘The Good Earth’).

In 1993, he received a Filmfare ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ and in 1996 he received a Screen Videocon ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’.

Of late he was involved in the direction of a new all American film Project ‘Song Of Life’ – a musical love story which was to be shot in the United States.

He was to play the central character in the film which was to have a predominantly American star cast.

Dev Anand is the second of three brothers who were active in Hindi Cinema. His brothers are Chetan Anand and Vijay Anand. Their sister, Sheel Kanta Kapur, is the mother of renowned film director Shekhar Kapur.

Veteran actor-director Dev Anand will be honoured with the national Kishore Kumar Samman for the year 2010-11 by the Madhya Pradesh government.

Similarly, noted music director, Rajesh Roshan will be bestowed with the national Lata Mangeshkar award. Giving this information, State Culture Minister Laxmikant Sharma said both film personalities had done a commendable work in their long cinematic career.

They will be presented with Rs two lakh in cash, a scroll of honour, shawl and `shreephal`.

The 88-year-old `evergreen` actor will be felicitated at a function in Khandwa on October 13 while Roshan will recieve the award at a function in Indore for which the date is yet to be finalised.

Last year on the occasion of 60th anniversary of his home production Navketan films, Dev Anand announced his film Chargesheet. Yesterday, the evergreen star launched the movie’s first look along with the cast of the film at Hotel Novatel in Mumbai.

And guess who plays the hero in the film! Yes! it’s Dev saab who plays a CBI offcer in the film and is shown cracking an underworld nexus in his unique rocking style.

The veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah plays an underworld don in the film. Chargesheet also stars Divya Dutta in pivotal role; the actress was also present at the first look launch and was wearing a short dress.

At the launch, Dev saab entertained the media with his cool sense of humour. We salute the 87-year-old actor for his undeterred spirit as he continues to make films till now.

Legendary actor Dev Anand recently paid a visit to the iconic Taj by the seaface in Mumbai and it reminded him of the time he spent at the hotel while shooting for his films.

‘Had gone to the Taj in town at the Gateway (of India) for a meeting and was wondering about the shoots I did there right from Taxi Driver till Mr Prime Minister,’ Dev Anand, 87, wrote on microblogging site Twitter.

Meanwhile, the actor is looking for a new face, who could be as good as Zeenat Aman for the modern age adaptation of his 1971 cult hit Hare Rama Hare Krishna.

Dev Anand’s cult classic Hum Dono is releasing in colour on February 4 this year.

The veteran actor invited the army chief as the main guest at the premiere, which is likely to include a lot of B-Towners as well. Anand says, “Since the film pays a tribute to the Indian army, during the premiere of Hum Dono in 1961 I had invited Lieutenant General Choudhary, who was the area commander in Southern Command then.

He was an important man. He asked me to come to the Gun house in Bombay.

From Kajol to Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor, from Amitabh Bachchan to Rajnikanth, SRK, Salman Khan and Hrithik Roshan, everyone has been invited to attend the grand premiere of Dev Anand’s evergreen classic entertainer Hum Dono in color.

The stylish superstar has been personally inviting the actors from various film industries to attend the show. Especially he wants the younger generation of actors to watch the film as they would have heard about it, but never had a chance to watch as it was released 50 years back.

Dev Anand’s films are well known for their hit songs. His association with music composers Shankar-Jaikishen, O. P. Nayyar, Kalyanji-Anandji, Sachin Dev Burman and his son Rahul Dev Burman, lyricists Hasrat Jaipuri, Majrooh Sultanpuri, Neeraj, Shailendra, Anand Bakshi, and playback singers Mohammad Rafi, Mahendra Kapoor, Mukesh and Kishore Kumar produced some very popular songs.

The latest news in tinsel ville these days is that South demi God Rajnikanth had organized a special screening of “Robot” for veteran actor Dev Anand.

A source stated that the special screening of “Robot” will be shown in a multiplex in Juhu. Dev Anand’s manager got a call from Rajni’s office informing him about Rajni’s desire to arrange for a special screening of “Robot” for Dev Anand.

Earlier this year, Dev Anand was invited as a chief guest by Rajni’s wife Latha for a special event in Chennai.

Baazi, Guru Dutt’s directorial debut. The film, written by actor Balraj Sahni, was a trendsetter of sorts leading to the spate of urban crime thrillers Bollywood churned out in the 1950s. The film took Dev Anand to dramatic star status. It was also the beginning of seeing Dev play mostly hard-bitten characters living in the urban underbelly.

The next pairing of Dev Anand and Guru Dutt was Jaal (1952). Dev played a heartless smuggler who only repents right at the end of the film. It was a finely shaded performance but the film didn’t do too well at the box-office. The partnership came to an end when Guru Dutt decided to act in his own films.
Dev anand went for guru dutt and they cameo ut with baazi in 1951 the film did very well. It took dev anand to a star status.

Our friendship dates back to the Prabhat era..he was assistant director to a very famous director. I had just started as a leading man. I think if I can call anybody in the movie industry as my greatest pal it was Guru Dutt. And we struck a great friendship jaise langotiya yaar kehte hain hum jaise dost the. And we struck a deal over a glass of beer and then he said Dev..if I ever become a director you are my star and I said if I ever form a company and I invite a directory to direct a film you’re going to be THE one.

I was on the sets of Teen Deviyan and I was ghost directing for Amarjeet a friend of ours and I got a news that Guru Dutt is dead. I packed up.. I went straight to his house and I was the first man to see him lying on his bed. There wasn’t anybody in the room. I was the first man to enter the apartment and be near his body. and I saw him and his face was blue slightly. There was a glass of…. there was a blue liquid in a glass next to him and I think. I do not know what happened….it was a very sudden death. and I had met him 5-6 days earlier when he had invited me -come over let’s do a picture together but at that moment a I also realized when I saw that he was looking very frail very feeble…yellow on the face, he had lost his hair. This was not the same Guru Dutt because he had made some very beautiful films…the film that he made Kaagaz Ke Phool was a very brilliant film but it didn’t do well..and he could not take it after that he never directed a picture. so that was the start of his physical downfall. Even his creative downfall. Sad..
